CUSTOMER RETENTION

Turn First-Time Customers Into Regulars

Most first-timers never come back — not because they did not like you, but because nothing reminded them. Here is what to switch on, and when, in the thirty days that decide it.

Is Retention Really Your Problem?

Two numbers from last month. If you do not have them yet, your Dashboard shows new and repeat customers for any period.

A rough guide from your own numbers, not an industry benchmark. What counts as good depends on how often people need what you sell.

Why they do not come back

Four Reasons, Four Fixes

First-timers rarely leave because of one big thing. It is usually one of these — and each has a setting that answers it.

Nobody decides not to come back. A week passes, then a month, and you are just not on their mind. A paper card in a drawer does not help.

The fix: the card lives in their phone’s wallet, a welcome push lands the moment they install it, and a reminder goes out when they are due back.

How push notifications work →

One stamp out of twelve does not feel like progress. If the first reward looks far away, the card is easy to ignore.

The fix: give a head start on install — Workflow Builder can add a bonus stamp or points automatically — and keep the first reward within a few visits.

How stamp cards work →

A slow coffee, a wrong order, a rushed haircut. Most people will not complain — they just will not come back.

The fix: ask every first-timer how it went, a few hours after their visit. Happy answers are shown your Google review link; unhappy ones reach you privately, while you can still fix it.

How feedback collection works →

The place next to their office, the one with the app they already have. If you wait for them to remember you, a competitor gets the second visit.

The fix: RFM notices when a new customer starts to drift, and a Workflow Builder chain sends a push the moment they move into that segment.

Three Numbers on Your Dashboard

Retention takes time to show. Give it two months before you judge anything.

Retention rate Customers seen in both periods ÷ customers this period

Choose a 60, 120, or 240-day window. The shortest is 60 days, so a program launched this week tells you nothing yet.

Repeat customers People on a second or later visit

The most direct sign that first-timers are turning into regulars. Compare it with new customers for the same period.

Churn rate Customers from last period who did not come back

The mirror image of retention. If it falls month on month, the first 30 days are working.

Retention questions

What Owners Ask Us

The automations start working with the first customer who installs the card. The numbers take longer: retention rate uses a 60-day window at minimum, so judge it after two months, not two weeks.
Over the first month, a new customer gets a handful at most — a welcome, a question, a reminder, and one more only if they drift. Each one is useful to them. On Android, Google Wallet shows no more than three notifications per card per day anyway.
No. Push notifications, feedback collection, RFM segments, and Workflow Builder are on every plan, and push is free and unlimited. If you would rather not set any of it up by hand, Loyalty AI on the Business plan decides who to nudge and when.
Usually not first. A head-start stamp and a timely reminder cost you almost nothing. Save money-off offers for customers who have genuinely drifted, and make them part of the card, not a one-off coupon.
Push only reaches cardholders, so the real first step is getting the card into every new customer’s phone. Ask at the till, every time. If you collect phone numbers or emails another way, SMS and email mailings can reach people without a card.
